As darkness swallows whole the day,
I pray the fray abates tonight.
Concern hangs heavy near the cape;
the lines in sight diverge with light.
I sigh as spray engulfs green bays,
shifting to red, then sickly white.
Midnight delays, the moon betrays,
and all that’s bright is erudite.
Stars no more — the horror conveyed,
profound, the void in anti-light.
No gray inside a dark doorway;
dismayed, what’s right concedes the fight.
The air vibrates a hummed dismay,
a chill that’s felt in cold twilight.
All that remains is to obey
the voice that hums and close the rite.
