Perfect Purpose

from the early notebook

Since the beginning of time recorded,
a monumental search persists in man;
but lost in life is little afforded,
and such importance of little demand.

The plea I speak of rests within purpose,
a common thought, although not always found;
there are many ways we use this compass —
internal guidelines so wholly profound.

I assert now the need to discover,
to find this most important existence:
a vision lying plainly undercover,
though frequently it meets with much resistance.

For in the end, when life is expired,
you’ll find that purpose was, in life, required.
