The Riddle of Life

from the early notebook

Ethan’s Riddle:

I continue unendingly, yet seem to stop without acknowledgment.
I regret, and yet feel gratitude, sometimes — depending on the mood.
When I drift, it’s sudden; I float along briefly,
yet sometimes am able to guide my course freely.
I’m aware of my surroundings when it suits me,
this being a general stereotype of what I choose to see.
If you choose me and use me,
you’ll be sure never to lose me.
If more people understood me, life would be much simpler.
I’m a course of reason, the product of logic —
a combination of these in an entity neurologic.
You can’t imagine life without me;
you can’t live without me.
What am I?
